Trézor.io/Start® — Starting Up Your Device

A friendly, secure walk-through to get your Trézor device out of the box and protecting your crypto — with clear steps, safety tips, and troubleshooting.

Before you begin — what to prepare

Checklist

  • Original Trézor device box and cables (USB-C / micro-USB depending on model).
  • A separate computer or smartphone with a modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari, or Firefox).
  • Stable internet connection for initial firmware and software downloads.
  • Pen and paper for writing your recovery seed in a secure, offline place — do not store it digitally.

Safety note: Never share your recovery seed or private key with anyone. Trézor staff or legitimate support will never ask for it.

Unboxing and inspection

Visual inspection

When you open the package, check the tamper seals and plastic wrapping. The device should be clean, free of damage, and match the model you ordered (Tézor Model One, Model T, etc.). If anything looks suspicious, contact the vendor before powering on.

What to look for

  • Intact holographic/tamper seal (if present).
  • Accessory cables present and matching the product description.
  • No pre-written recovery seed cards included — a new device will not have a pre-set seed.

First boot & website

Connect and visit the official start page

Power up the device by connecting it with the supplied cable to your computer. Visit trézor.io/start — make sure the URL is spelled correctly and uses HTTPS. The official web start page will guide you to the correct Trezor Suite or web app for your model.

Tip: Prefer using a fresh browser profile or a browser you use for security-sensitive tasks to avoid extension interference. Disable unnecessary browser extensions while setting up.

Install recommended software

Trezor Suite (recommended)

Trezor Suite is the official companion app that helps you initialize your device, install firmware, manage accounts, and sign transactions. Download it from the official site linked at the start page — verify the domain and certificate before installing.

  1. Download and install Trezor Suite on your OS (Windows, macOS, or Linux) or use the supported web app.
  2. Open the app — it will detect your device and offer to install the latest firmware if needed.
  3. Allow the device to update firmware only when connected and after confirming prompts on the device screen.

Initialize your Trezor

Create a new wallet

Follow the on-screen instructions to create a new wallet. The device will generate a recovery seed (usually 12, 18, or 24 words). Write these words down on the recovery card provided — do not photograph or store them digitally.

Secure storage

  • Store the written recovery seed in at least two separate physical locations you control.
  • Consider metal backup products for long-term durability against fire or water damage.

Security best practices

Do's

  • Always confirm transaction details on the device screen before approving.
  • Keep firmware up to date via official sources only.
  • Use a strong PIN code that you can remember but others cannot guess.

Don'ts

  • Do not enter your recovery seed into a computer or phone.
  • Do not use unknown third-party tools that request your seed or private key.

Troubleshooting common issues

Device not recognized

If your computer doesn't detect the device: try a different cable, a different USB port, or another computer. Make sure the device screen shows the prompt to connect to Trezor Suite. Restarting the computer can also help.

Firmware or installation errors

If a firmware update fails, do not share your recovery seed. Reconnect and retry the official installer from the start page. If problems persist, contact official Trezor support with images of the error and device state (but never your seed).

Advanced: Passphrase & hidden wallets

Trezor supports optional passphrases that can create hidden wallets. This adds an extra layer of security (and complexity). Use passphrases only if you fully understand the tradeoffs: if you forget the passphrase you lose access to that wallet — the seed plus passphrase are both needed.

FAQ

Q: Can I initialize my device offline?

A: The device itself generates the seed offline. However, to install software and firmware you will usually need an internet connection. The initial seed generation does not rely on an online server.

Q: What if I lose my recovery seed?

A: Losing the recovery seed is equivalent to losing access to funds if the device is lost or destroyed. If you lose it and still have the device, create a new wallet and back up its seed immediately.

Q: Who do I contact for support?

A: Use official channels linked at the start page. Never trust support requests that ask for your seed or private keys. Legitimate support may ask for device screenshots, model, and firmware version but not for secret material.

That's it — a secure start. When in doubt, pause and verify: correct domains, correct prompts on your device, and never reveal your recovery seed.
